Environment- Environmental Care Management
Environmental CARE Management
To allow close monitoring of our green performance and achieve continuous improvement, OOCL Logistics has adopted a 4-step Environmental CARE management cycle which enables us to plan, implement and regulate our green performance in a more effective and systematic manner.
Step 1 Commit
Establish environmental policy, objctives, long and short term target.
Step 2 Apply
Apply the green strategy into daily operations wherever possible.
Step 3 Review
Regularly review green performance and identify areas for further improvement.
Step 4 Expand
Expand the scope of green measures in our daily operations.
In line with the OOCL group environmental policy, we pledge to achieve sustainable economic growth while minimising the impact to the environment caused by our logistics operations. We establish and commit to short and long-term environmental targets and apply green measures to our daily operations wherever possible. Moreover, our green performance is reviewed annually in order to discover potential areas where we can expand the scope of our green measures.
Green Focus Areas and Initiatives
We commit ourselves to reducing emissions, promoting environment care and conserving resources. We have defined the following six aspects as the focus for implementing green initiatives:
Green Logistics
Green Information
With the rapid development of information technology, OOCL Logistics has endeavoured to achieve paperless operations to save our forests and at the same time enhance the efficiency and accuracy of information flow. We encourage the collaboration of our logistics stakeholders in establishing paperless communication channels.
Our Initiatives:
- Implementation of paperless information flow between clients, vendors and OOCL Logistics offices
- Implementation of paperless archiving systems
Green Warehouse
Warehouses often consume more materials than other logistics activities while generating additional waste products. OOCL Logistics makes every effort to conserve the resources and reduce the amount of waste produced by our warehouse operations.
Our Initiatives:
- Reduction of the use of paper, water and electricity
- Reuse and recycling of warehouse materials
- Designing energy-efficient warehouse layouts
- Reducing and managing waste
- Utilising electric forklifts
Green Transport
Transportation is considered a section in logistics operations that has substantial negative impact on the environment. We strive to minimise the carbon emissions in cargo movements locally and globally.
Our Initiatives:
- Modernise our company-owned vehicle fleet
- Utilisation of green fuels
- Promotion of modal shift
- Optimisation of load factors
- Redefinition of route planning
- Promotion of eco-driving training
- Close management of fleet maintenance and replacements
- Retrofitting of catalytic converters
Green Office
OOCL Logistics’ green measures are implemented beyond our frontline operations. We have initiated wide-ranging green practices in our offices, worldwide, to protect the environment.
Our Initiatives:
- Reduced usage of paper, water, electricity and toner cartridges
- Recycling waste (e.g. paper, plastics, metal)
- Implementing energy-saving policies, including efficient power, lighting and office temperature management
- Providing green training to all employees
- Reduction of business travel
- Organisation of green activities
Green Community
Our green commitment goes beyond our business operations. Since 2007, we have organised an OOCL Group Green Week, held first week of every July, to support environmental care. We do our utmost to support green development in the community by participating in voluntary activities, green education and green project sponsorship.
Our Initiatives:
- Enhancing green awareness within our communities
- Making green contributions to society
- Sponsorship or donations to green organisations
Green Subcontractor
OOCL Logistics green operations commitment extends to our subcontractors, where we work with environmentally responsible subcontractors as a crucial factor in truly green operations. We have established various measures to ensure the green performance of our subcontractors as well as encouraging them to work with us to achieve shared sustainability goals.
Our Initiatives:
- Embedding green criteria in subcontractor evaluations
- Setting up green requirements
- Reviewing green performance
- Providing green training and guidance
