Panama Canal Update – July 22, 2026

OOCL Logistics Update – July 22, 2026

Panama Canal Draft Restrictions – Carrier Surcharges Follow

The Panama Canal Authority announced a series of draft reductions to take effect in July and August 2026 due to concerns that a developing El Niño could reduce water availability in Gatun Lake. These restrictions reduce the amount of cargo large vessels can carry through the canal, increasing transit and booking costs.

The draft restrictions and dates are as follows;

July 3rd – 49.5 feet draft restriction

July 24th – 49 feet draft restriction

August 15th – 48.5 feet draft restriction

Many ocean carriers have announced surcharges ranging from $100 per TEU up to $320 per TEU tied to these low water draft limitations at the Panama Canal. Additional surcharge announcements from ocean carriers are expected.
